The "Quick" is an important element in the Quick Sketch System. We are traditionally trained to search out and learn the conceptual aspects of everything, but the integrative complexities, visual thinking, motor skills and the 'emotional content' are often given little exploration. The Arts are an important exception. The Quick Sketch System concentrates, explores and extends whole self integration, not exclusively the visual skills. There are several important reasons for working quickly at least some of the time.
We use time limitations to temporarily overwhelm the conceptual/verbal areas of the brain. The narrowly focused conceptual brain will habitually interfere with our visual and spacial operations. It will tell us that it can't do it. It can't! In order to teach the usually dominant linguistic, logical brain to share responsibilities, we set unfamiliar criteria to make it impossible to conceptually cope with the complex interrelationships of even simple sketches. Your natural visual capacities will begin to take control and develop under these conditions.
The vocabulary used for drawing is far more extensive than the ABCs. The relationships are far more complex than linear verbal processes. don't worry! We are naturally good at integration and do it fluently all of the time. Time restraints make clear the necessity for focusing on learning one or a few tools at a time with clutter of otherwise important elements temporarily ignored. The separated elements are reintegrated in whatever way is appropriate later. The variation of which and how many elements is the artist’s choice. Think back and you will recall that this is how you learned to spell and write. Gradually, much more about the value of quick visual abbreviation will emerge.
For the purposes of the' Quick Sketch System' we will flexibly define Quick Sketch as a sketch accomplished in under five minutes. Don't freak out! Remember, these are not extensive drawings. It is much easier than you might think. It will become like signing your name. Instruction and coaching are available. We are going to focus on only a few things at a time and place them on automatic in the subconscious where they will spontaneously emerge as needed. Think of how words flow without struggle when we speak or write.
